History

The History Circle presents a programme of talks embracing a wide range of topics of historical interest.
Invited guest speakers, subject matter experts and academics give the Circle a unique insight into their chosen fields of research.
Topics are drawn from around the world and from any period of recorded history. In the past year subjects have included biographies from early Melbourne, the Crusades, recent Cambodia, and the lifestyle of Italian renaissance nobility discovered through private correspondence.

In the coming year, we have invited some speakers on Gallipoli, it being the 100th anniversary of the conflict. These speakers include Hugh Dolan speaking on ‘The Untold Story Behind the Gallipoli Landings’ and Kirsty Harris speaking on ‘ Australian Nurses on the Island of Lemnos’.

The Circle meets on the 2nd Thursday of the month, at 2.00 pm in the Nina Bagot Room. You can join us for lunch in the Dining Room beforehand, and usually with the invited speaker, at 12:00 pm for 12:30 pm. Everyone is welcome.

Evening Bridge

This Circle meets on the third Thursday of the month beginning in February and finishing in November.

Dinner beforehand at 6.30 pm is optional. Bridge begins at 7.30 pm

Numbers for 2014 have been low but the committee is optimistic that this will improve in 2015. Guests are warmly welcomed.

Nanette Home convenes the Circle but all committee members make a significant contribution by directing one or more of the monthly games each year

Writers

The Writer’s Circle meets on the first and fourth Mondays of the month. Members are encouraged to present their original writing, but it is not essential. Enjoyment of the written word in all genres, the creative process of writing and discussion of presented pieces are our main activities at meetings. The Circle sometimes has special events such as guest speakers. All writers, from basic to published authors, are very welcome. Feedback on work, if requested, is offered in a positive environment and there are distinct advantages in being able to read one’s work aloud to an audience.

Travel

The Travel Circle is indebted to our wonderful and adventurous travelling membership for their delightful presentations.  Our talks are enriched by the information we’ve received and the pictorial visits we’ve made.

Serendipity

As a direct result of discussions with ‘Savage’ John Marshall during the collaborative Lyceum Club/Savage Club Cabarets 2002 and 2003, Serendipity came to existence on 4th March 2004. The intention was and still is to provide a forum for the working or busy Club member who has a tight time schedule.

The intrinsic idea is for members and guests to be invited to participate in and enjoy Serendipity, “The faculty of making happy and unexpected discoveries by accident”. Meeting the first Monday of each month between 1230 – 1330, over a one course lunch, including wine and coffee, those present are addressed by a “mystery” speaker.

This Circle is wonderfully exciting and I invite you all to partake.

Science & Medicine

We are living through an unprecedented scientific revolution affecting many areas of every day life: the food we eat, the medical procedures we use and the drugs we take, our daily communication, social relations and transportation. Our Circle attempts to inform on the latest developments in science and medicine and their history.

The disciplines we cover include biological, physical and social sciences, which apply accepted scientific methods and technologies.   Our speakers are leaders in their field who are also good communicators. This is an all inclusive, open and friendly group where members and guests are welcome.
