Subject: Mona: the only certainty is change
Mona, the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, is the largest private museum in Australia, with a collection ranging from antiquities through Australian modernism to contemporary international art. Its owner is Tasmanian-born David Walsh, who, in sharing his collection with the public and through an ambitious exhibition and publication program, hopes to challenge conventional approaches to art and to belief – at least in part through sensory shock and disequilibrium.
Mona advertises itself as ‘a museum, or something. In Tasmania, or somewhere. Catch the ferry. Drink beer. Eat cheese. Talk crap about art. You’ll love it.’ I’d also add: ‘Think about some really big things. About why we humans do the things we do, for example.’ The museum is David Walsh’s experiment: questioning, unpredictable, and fun.
We’ve been celebrating our tenth birthday in 2021 and we’ve done it in some style by rearranging the whole display. So even if you’ve been before, there’ll be plenty of reasons to come again as soon as that’s possible!
